ASX 200 Dips: CSL, PME, BHP Surge, Banks & Retail Sag (2026)

The ASX 200 experienced a dip, with CSL, PME, and BHP surging in results, but failing to outweigh the sagging banks and retail sector. The index managed its fifth-straight loss, with a session of double-digit gains in CSL and Pro Medicus, and a strong performance from BHP. Most other sectors and stocks retreated, particularly in resources, financials, and consumer stocks.

Health Care (+7.8%) was the standout performer, driven by the positive alignment of three major constituents: CSL (+17.3%), Pro Medicus (+11.9%), and Cochlear (+7.6%). These companies reported strong results, with CSL guiding for a return to earnings growth, Pro Medicus delivering a 22.9% revenue jump, and Cochlear reporting at the top end of guidance. This rare occurrence of simultaneous positive results from major constituents is a significant event, happening perhaps once a decade.

Energy (+1.0%) saw a boost from rising oil prices, with Beach Energy (+3.4%) and Karoon Energy (+2.6%) leading the sector. Materials (+0.2%) finished fractionally positive due to BHP's (+2.7%) strong performance, despite broader sector weakness. However, most copper-exposed ASX names fell, with Sandfire Resources (-2.0%) and Capstone Copper (-2.2%) declining.

Financials (-1.1%) suffered their seventh decline in eight sessions, with Bendigo and Adelaide Bank (-5.3%) and HUB24 (-7.3%) falling after reporting results. Consumer Discretionary (-1.0%) and Consumer Staples (-1.2%) extended the consumer confidence collapse, with retail stocks like Breville Group (-3.0%) and Woolworths (-1.8%) underperforming. Information Technology (-1.0%) split sharply, with WiseTech Global (+2.6%) and Xero (+0.8%) advancing, while Iress (-8.4%) and Life360 (-8.2%) declined.

In other commodities, lithium stocks ran out of steam, with Liontown Resources (-7.3%) and Vulcan Energy Resources (-6.4%) falling. Banks and retailers continued to underperform, with Commonwealth Bank (-1.4%), Westpac (-1.2%), and Macquarie Group (-2.0%) retreating. The market's focus on healthcare and energy, coupled with the underperformance of banks and retailers, contributed to the overall market sentiment.
